Thats the story of this specific variant of Mermaid called Alternative. And while it is in modern Japan there are other versions that also take place in modern Japan, like reality Mermaid. But there are 2 versions of the sinoalice reality story, one from game's main story and one from the manga.
This happends to every sino story, you get the job story but then there's main story, event story, manga, merch. That are different from eachother. If there is a ''canon'' version of each sino its their ''fairy tale'' version aka the first costume they released with and that are seen in act 1 of game's main story.
