American pizza entirely relies on toppings for its taste. Italian in contrast is very specific about taste of the dough and texture. Americans simply don't have enough cultural heritage to bake good bread. Italians bread making goes all the way back to ancient Rome. They had centuries to perfect it. American pizza is literally a "we have pizza at home" pizza. Similar in concept but without actual understanding of a subject. If after eating a pizza you've got crust leftovers on your plate it's not a pizza. Simple as.
