Wind receives a system notification after you're done discussing the incident. He checks the window and gets to his feet slowly.
"Squid is done scanning."
"That fast?"
"Yeah. We already did all the groundwork before."
You move back to the lab without fanfare. As you walk, your stomach twists into a pit of dread. You don't want there to be any suspicious circumstances around your book. That tome helped you find your dream. It got you through years of an empty existence. You hate the idea of there being some nefarious purpose behind it. You want it to be what its always been to you: Just a book. Just a source of comfort.
That wish doesn't come true. You already know what you're going to find before you walk through those doors, and your fears are confirmed when you see the file properties window.
Fruit of Knowledge.Envy
You stare at the text, even as Squid extracts the book.app from the VM and sets it neatly in your hands.
"See? Good as new. Marnie? Marnie?"
"Huh? Oh, sorry... Just thinking about it."
You swipe at the window and dismiss it. That's three different keywords now, meaning that all three of your books are part of some kind of series. You slide yours back into your inventory.
"Hey, don't look too far into it. We'll handle the digging. You seem kinda freaked out by it." Wind says. He scratches the back of his head awkwardly, unsure of how to make you feel better.
"Come on, Marnie. Let's get home. Or we could go check out the sewers! Kicking some behind could cheer you up." Phascomon tugs at your pants leg.
You shake yourself out of your stupor. Mysterious words or not, that's still your book, and you're not throwing it away. You try to tell yourself that it doesn't matter, so you can move on with your day.
"Okay. We'll be going now. Thanks for the help, you guys."
"Bye! And seriously, don't tweak over this, okay? I'm sure it doesn't mean much." Squid calls.
"Bye, Marnie. Stay safe"
"Goodbye.
"Bye bye!"
You're in a hurry to leave the base after that, so you don't bother greeting all the Digimon-wielding members you traveled with the last time. You're not really more than acquaintances anyway. You return Phascomon to your Digivice and head upstairs. The barista waves as you step back onto the street.
