It really depends on how long you expect to play the character for, and whether you are actually sacrificing long-term gain or instead investing in a different way. You might be a few points behind in terms of traits, but if the money you gained was spent on armour which prevents permanent crippling injury or death, you've probably come out ahead. Ditto for weapons which allowed you to kill enemies before they hurt you, or devices which let you get the drop on them rather than the other way round.
