For 1900 years, Christians knew that the quote Cruz is referring to did not mean a literal country names Israel. Then American Evangelicals started the whole, "Every word in the bible must be taken literally" thing, and now a bunch of Evangelicals are ultra Zionists. Cruz is a Baptist, and I'm far from an expert on Baptist theology, but I guess Baptists also adopted the literal interpretation. Or Cruz is full of shit and just giving an excuse he thinks won't be challenged.

Either way, the vast majority of Christians for 2000 years would tell Cruz he's wrong.
