In Shrek they're trying to give him mass appeal by making his facial features look more like a fat human with green skin than hideous ogre, and similarly with Donkey. Manipulating a character's silhouette and facial structure to give off a desired emotional reaction. Which is exactly the message shrek 1 was opposed to by having a fat ugly ogre be the good guy. Which is exactly what pisses people off. Which is driving discussion.
