It's more like most of what made up /a/ left around 2015-2018.
The only people still sticking around are some lurkers and people who already posted on boards like /v/ and /tv/ anyways (cancer). /a/ prior to that point was comprised mostly of people who posted only on /a/ with pockets of people who crossposted on /jp/ and /m/ (ignoring /e/, /c/, /d/ and the like obviously).
Today though, /a/ is just like, a shell I guess. There's a lot of people who come here jerking off about how /a/ is the very FOUNDATIONS of 4chan and they have to protect it, which kind of makes the board boring, and then you have the inevitable /v/ posters who are also boring because they only have one or two jokes they can use per month. I'd say maybe about 5% of the board actually watches a significant amount of anime regularly, and I'd say even less are saying something significant and worth reading.
