Social democracy, democratic socialism and socialism are marxist doctrines considered pragmatic stepping stones to communism. Marx was explicit in the Critique of the Gotha Programme that he viewed democracy and principles of liberty as expedient, ostensibly because the "bourgeois right" will always have influence over it by merit of the fact they also have the vote or constitutional protections or other institutional means of holding onto their capital.
>Between capitalist and communist society there lies the period of the revolutionary transformation of the one into the other. Corresponding to this is also a political transition period in which the state can be nothing but the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat.
Eurosocialists and american progressives who constantly court and praise self-avowed socialists like AOC and Bernie all believe in this gradual transition to communism. They are not like a moderate that thinks some level of social welfare is a good idea or moral cause but rejects Marxist doctrine. Go to a place like r*ddit and it saturates their thinking to declare one group of people "privileged" and that this justifies denying them jobs, promotions, college places, government spending, tax breaks and so on, whatever issue are discussing. It is like bread and butter to them. This is why identity politics revolves around this "victim olympics", who is more oppressed and thus entitled to more from the government coffers filled by taxes from the few upper-middle class professionals and no nonsense managers that keep our technologically advanced economy running.
