Well first off, Imu is probably a non-gendered demonic entity of darkness, or some other genderless amorphic old god, so any discussion of applying gender to Imu is rather human centric (and we can guess how Imu feels about humans based on the gorosei).
The only character we've officially seen Imu possess is Gunko (unless I speed read and missed something).
There are some hints that Imu may currently be possessing Nefertary Lily, which if confirmed would put Imu on 2 for 2 of possessing women.
Lastly (and now we're getting into real schizo territory), Oda draws on many real life myths and mythology. Usually Sun is associated with male energy, and its opposite (usually Moon or Darkness) associated with female energy. If Imu is the ultimate villain, it makes sense that Imu is more female oriented as a foil to Nika's Sun/Light.
Now that doesn't make sense with Blackbeard as Luffy's pirate foil, in that he is also amassing darkness powers... oh wait except for that time that Doc Q created that virus to turn people into women
tl;dr Imu is a genderfluid demonic entity but skewed towards feminine/darkness/moon association as a foil to Nika's male/light/sun association
Thank you for coming to my ted talk
