Clipperton Island is a fascinating case, yeah! It's fun to see how a lot of French find it very interesting as a territory as well. And of course, only the US has ever effectively used the island! (Mexico did colonize it, too, but it's one of the most horrendous disasters in its history.) I'm pretty sure France itself has never done anything for the island--despite claiming rule over it since the year 1858, when it was claimed by the esoteric French Emperor Napoleon III--and they even forgot to check on it for some years one time and came back to find tons of Americans mining it for its resources! It's a fun case.
