That's not quite correct. The death equals loves ideas were set up by world mythologies much earlier than courtly love. The romances of Osiris and Isis, Orpheus and Eurydice, Izanagi and Izanami, Dumuzid and Inanna, Selene and Endymion, even Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Death was a lot more common in the past, storytelling reflects that, stuff like Romeo and Juliet does trace back from older legends. Yugioh plays into the Osiris and Isis myth rather heavily with Yugi and Anzu. Playmaker saving Blue Angel was very much trying be like Orpheus going into the underworld to save Eurydice. And Izanagi's journey to Izanami in Yomi is rather similar to that, so it always been a thing in japanese stories. Can't really take death out of the human experience or fiction.
