Child sacrifice is a very, very, VERY old practice that ancient, ancient humans used to perform during the most leanest of lean times. You sacrifice the young who are weak and about to die so that the others have something to eat. This ritual cannibalism, over time, developed into a form of superstition which eventually evolved into a ritual practice and then a religion.

I'm convinced the origins of human sacrifice predate written history and possibly even religion as we know it. in all likelihood, human sacrifice was something proto-man did during the stone ages in lean times of desperation when food was scarce and the tribal unit need to kill one of its own ( and eat it ) in order to survive. this grizzly practice over time developed into a symbolic offering but it certainly, originally, had a practical use.
