it's just a way for you to keep it alive when the mother is off the map/dead/etc, you don't have to worry about it at all if you've made child care top priority for the mom and have a small stockpile of baby food/insect jelly/milk just in case, she'll keep it breastfed. you could theoretically only breastfeed a child if you wanted, no point is being made about breastfeeding-only being impossible or worse than an equivalent, it's just a mechanical consideration (though we all know seed oils in formula will turn your infant into a pigskin)
