Imagine a game where you start out with a party of low-level adventurers. One of them's a pretty cute mage, and she's powerful for her level. She's got a lot of interesting story moments and dialogue with the main character, she's teased as a love interest, she's basically in the running for second protagonist.

Then, at the end of the first chapter, you lose to the villain in a scripted fight. He downs your party, and then when you wake up your mage is gone. You progress through the whole story expecting to see her again, but you never do. She's quickly replaced by a newly recruited mage, who quickly ingratiates herself into the party. As the story progresses you forget about the original mage - clearly she was just there to die for shock value.

Then, in the final level, you can enter the villain's study. In the corner, a stone bust of your old ally from chapter 1. She's been chiseled down to just her head and torso, and she's covered in the stains of several chapters' worth of cumshots. All that remains distinguish her is a plaque bearing her name, rank and level.

None of the characters ever comment on it - it's been years since they last saw her. And there's no way to turn her back anyway. All you can do is leave her, immortalised as a monument to her own defeat in the corner of her worst enemy's domain. All that obvious potential they were setting her up for, and she becomes nothing more than a lewd easter egg coated in jizz. Doesn't even get mentioned in the ending montage.
