I mean not really, I lived this era and was formerly an anime enthusiast. Pokemon was the big one, DBZ wasn't even that huge until like it was reran among the younger generation of fans to see it, like by the time they had fancy articulated action figures and not these, the ones I actually grew up with and you'd still get weird looks from people for liking DBZ along with like the weird Indian kid lol
Truly, 1998-00s was like the anime boom but even then, there were plenty of nerds more content to watch shit like Justice League and X-Men Evolution over any of that "weird japanese stuff". And in a weird way, I respect that era more. I cringed at turbo weebs of those days at school cause I was more on the "down low" with my nerdy shit by then, but I respect some fat zitty bitch in wearing cat ears and the most sloppily applied wanna be goth makeup to school and dealing with being mocked more than like the modern normie status of anime. These days I have no interest in talking to the modern anime fan who is just a broccoli/cheeto headed idiot wearing sweatpants in public, thinking the MCU makes them a "marvel fan", and listening to soundcloud trap and Doja Cat or Billie Eilish. Makes me wanna barf.
