Thanks, I've especially liked the idea that Doc's planet wasn't one of the usual ones since the ARG tape talking about the lumberjack destroying Civilizations regardless of development or relation to other civilizations. I also vaguely feel like Doctor's homeworld was unimaginably decayed in the time from birth to leaving which is why Doctor is so filled with wonder at life in the rest of the universe and so dedicated to winning until the last second because he was born into a place where despair wasn't an option.

I can see that point, and think it's kind of correct; however, I don't think Ascalon is supposed to be very good at doing that. Unintentionally or intentionally the writing portrays Ascalon as being read like a book by almost everyone except Theresis and Doctor. I think it feels telling she finds the RI design humidifier novel enough to get two more and does stuff like failing to retrain herself from talking about how scary sandbeasts are. Her teardrop mark might even be a design allusion to how she fails to hide her sentimentalness.
