The people that came up with Diebuster's ending deserve the benefit of the doubt, they wrote an ending that enhances the original and serves as a satisfying conclusion both to itself and to the Gunbuster saga as a whole without diminishing either story. It's one of the absolute best anime endings ever along with Ashita no Joe and Cowboy Bebop.
