Very rarely does God go to these type of theatrical displays.
He uses exactly the correct amount of power needed for His glory and Majesty to be revealed.

We see that He used an earthquake and an angel to free Peter from prison but at another point the Apostle Paul had to be lowered in a basket from the city walls in humility because a whole town was trying to arrest and kill him.

It’s not the way you want it to be. It’s God’s decision how He manifests His powers.

As we see, both times His actions were successful.
My theory is He did not want to strike a whole town dead because a few people had lied about and slandered Paul and many were only reacting to what they had been told. And He wanted His children to take part in Paul’s rescue and be a part of the Kingdom.
Wherein with Peter, after the Resurrection and all the other things happening and before there were many Christians in existence chose to show Peter and the early believers something overwhelmingly supernatural to encourage them and make them understand. It worked to.

They were actively praying all night for Peters safety and a miracle and the girl that answered Peters knock was so excited she forgot to open the door and let Peter in. He had to knock again lol.
