It was both as good as people claim it is and as bad as people claim it is.

It has great ideas, really good new mons, one of the better and more engaging storylines, the freedom to explore is really nice, great cast of supporting characters, good difficulty, the main gimmick is pretty good, but the way it runs, the graphics, the generally empty region with no enterable houses, the glitches, etc are all fucking unacceptable for even a Pokemon game.

I would say right now it's upper mid tier at best but if they just made it look and play better and added 1/2 years dev time to improve things and add more polish it could have been a top tier pokemon game and the first in a very long time

The Kitakami DLC with Ogerpon can be done right away after the prologue. The levels even scale close to the main game (first battle is level 11 and the last is close to 40). If you do it after completing the main story all the levels are around 70 and don't increase. The side story with Perrin is always level 70 so even if you go there right away it'll be high level

The Unova academy DLC is post game only and only if you clear the Kitakami DLC first, it's all level 70 plus

The Pecharunt epilogue is after you clear both DLCs
