I think the best insight on how you become a resonator was the 1.2 missable event with a little boy trying to awaken by putting himself in risk against tacet discord so he could become a "hero". Basically a somewhat "traumatic" event will cause the awakening phenomena that is a change in the resonance pattern that allows them to use a forte ability (and some physical mutations due to the genetic effect involved). The resonance can be something that has steadly grown (natural), abruptly increases (mutant) or perfectly stable since birth (congenital), or even induced (artificial}. If a resonator experiences a second growth in ability he'll probably lose control of the forte and have some serious consequences (overclock), with only 3 exceptions (jinhsi, cantarella, carthetyia).
