Here's a brainstorm for a different part of this universe, lemme know thoughts.
I've always envisioned that there was a big cultural split in humanity when it discovered the FTL enabling crystals. Some people wanted to use it for FTL, others wanted to study it to see how it could raise up the standard of human life and didn't want to bother leaving the solar system.
The humans the setting focuses on are the ones who left. However earth/solar system is still back there. I originally wanted those humans to be somewhat distant but still involved tenuously with the colonizing humans, with the earth society being a blatant rip off of Star Trek Federation earth. The idea was I could use it to comment on the kind of moral cowardice and hypcrasy they had with an idealisic but very isolationist and stagnant culture that was only doing as well as it was from a luck of the draw of not having been hit by any major galactic hardships.
