what you said about reaction time makes sense, like i said before even if it only gives you an advantage in fringe scenarios its an advantage that has a large effect when you scale it across x 1000 mobile suits produced/ destroyed. but truly its a matter of what looks based or not based. if the enemy thinks that you look based it gives you the advantage and they may join your side in order to look based themselves. i dont have have sources for this btw.
