There's a sublime psychological aspect to tentacles that nothing else quite has - the terror of the total unknown. A monster that huge and unnatural could be capable of *anything* - and since it's not like they deign to explain themselves to their captives, all the victims can do is tremble in terror as they wait to see what happens to them.
