You shrug, unbothered by his words. You knew full well the advantages you had over ordinary people as a result of your Crests. Those same advantages would increase tenfold if you had a corresponding Heroes Weapon. One of those types alone would be a handful to deal with, let alone the over a dozen or so that reportedly fought at Gronder that day.

“Me and my unit were commanded to protect Empress Edelgard.” Cuthbert continues. “The Alliance’s soldiers weren’t nearly as good as we were. The war had been raging for five years at that point, and they’d stayed out of the fighting for the most part. We had more experience, but they had a Crest empowered sorcerer who’d single-handedly blown a hole through our defense, felling hundreds. Our line faltered, and the Mad King of Faerghus chose to use that opportunity to launch a suicide attack aiming for Edelgard’s head. Even with our losses, we’d outnumbered his forces, which at that point were exhausted, and suffering from ever decreasing morale. But the Mad King would not be stopped.”

The Mad King, or rather, the Last King of Faerghus, was Dimitri Blaiddayd. Legends of his cruelty on the battlefield persisted to this day. He wielded the Crest of Blaiddyd, along with the Heroes Relic, Areadbhar. Following his death, the Crest of Blaiddyd was thought to be lost to history.

“As the Mad King grew closer to Edelgard, I watched as many of my comrades tried to hold him back.” Cuthbert recollects. “He slew them in droves. Often with a single swing. I still remember his Crest activating, over and over, as the men and women that I’d spent years fighting and bleeding alongside died one after the other. Eventually, it was my turn to try and stop him. By sheer luck, I’d managed to survive where many of my comrades did not. I only caught a glancing blow from his spear, but it was enough to maim me for life.” He points to his shut, scarred eye. “I’ll never forget the helplessness I felt that day. Knowing that there are more people like him out there, all gathering in one place, and that that thing inside Elric’s body wishes to fight them…it’s enough to fill me with great dread.”

Silence falls upon the two of you once more as you absorb Cuthbert’s story. Eventually, he breaks it by asking you a question.

“Tell me, you started this journey because you were bored, no? You felt like you wanted your fair share of fighting that you’d missed out on. That’s all well and good now, but what happens once you win? And the fighting stops, and you’re now expected to rule like a monarch? Will you seek more fights to pick?”
