its pretty simple really. you watch their back and they watch yours. its how most social animals operate really. you dont even have to go THAT philosophically deep. its just simple cause and effect for better odds of survival or comfort. think of the caveman who offered the first wolf some scraps of meat and in time gained himself a nice little alarm bell/hunting partner.
