What's really funny is the lore behind those giant mechas pretty much IS that they were Evangelions. Squads deploying them to fight off otherworldly monsters.
I think it's funny that seeing them the initial assumption would be that they were rampaging death machines lost to time, but the reality is that they were full on mecha anime.
