As I said in the last thread, this is one of those situations where you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. He will have known the exact red flags to look out for before an attack even begins, and he probably reacted too quickly to have proof that he was about to be attacked, but if he'd left it any later, he could be the one dead now.
I've seen it multiple times in my life. A gang of scrawny druggy yobs approach you, looking nervous and checking all around, and immediately start asking you for something (the time, if they can't get a cigarette, directions, etc.) but it's a distraction so that they can cheapshot you and jump you. It's guaranteed to happen and nothing they do prior to the assault is considered aggressive or illegal, but they all do it like that. If you were to kill them in self-defence at that point, you'd be considered a murderer and they'd dismiss the self-defence charge, because they lack both the experience and the context to understand the situation that was about to unfold.
