Whew.
What a confusing ending to re:lord. I guess it's an inescapable 3 person induced loop with Julius foreseeing the future and trying to stop both his own death (coup plot) and Willfried killing him as a result of stopping that death (losing the war that inevitably begins). This causes Willfried to die and the real loop to start with Ria sending witches back in time and herself becoming the Saint - which in turn results in Willfried ending up capable of looping. From this point on it becomes a truly unbreakable looping hell held together by paradoxes and Julius being the failsafe - if they succeed in changing the past and escape the loop, Julius will still foresee and prevent his own death leading to Willfried dying and the whole thing restarting. In theory the ending hints at change being possible, with Ria going back in time - but in actuality it seems it's held up by multiple paradoxes where both the time travelling Ria and Willfried changing things up would lead to the other being unable to loop and thus fuck up everything because their looping to the point of changing that depends on the other one already looping and having changed things. Looping layers. It's a real fucking mess, but I think it does make sense.
For what it's worth I think they should have kept it simpler and just ending on Saint either saving him or sending him back in time in some way that made a closed loop without the epilogues. I suppose this ending leaves a chance at least, or maybe they really wanted the sequel bait option open. Fuck knows.
What a fucking tragic story though.
