I think Jesus existed, but like literally everything in history, was warped and changed radically. In the movie the last temptation of christ, in a dying hallucination(?) he thought about what it would be like to not sacrifice himself for man, to be given a second chance and just live as a guy. During that period he meets a jew who's preaching of christ's sacrifice. Jesus asks him what his deal is, and the jew says 'it doesn't matter if you didn't do it, the story is convenient.'
I found it strange how nobody else I was watching the movie with thought how fucked up that scene was.
From what I can discern, this is what I believe to be the truth:
Jesus was an enlightened individual with a massive capacity for thought and understanding. Unfortunately, you cannot teach highly advanced math and philosophy to people who thatch roofs and stomp around in mud for a living. They'll call you a psycho and throw rocks at you.
The word Divine means of or relating to god, and it can mean to understand or discover. I think those are basically synonyms.
Jesus did his best to teach people modes of thought to divine the way to higher consciousness and understanding. Unfortunately, taking those lessons too literally (heaven being a state of being, angels are the residents) will mistake them and devote their life to what is essentially escapism. Some find comfort in that, and that's why it's so difficult to address that mistake. Why would you want to ruin a person's comfort after all?
