It's a culmination of bullying + everything else, really. The Troupe Master very clearly groomed Lucian in such a way that he'd be "forced" to hurt himself in pursuit of the arts--one of the panels that stands out to me is of the Troupe Master calling out another student and complimenting them using the same words he used with Lucian, clearly taking advantage of Lucian being within earshot. I'm not sure if it's right to attribute all of his problems to his parental issues, I personally interpreted Lucian as having autism and schizophrenia, which also explains his reliance on the arts as a way of feeling "human".
