What really happened is Nintendo lost fans due to their legal bullshit and anti-consumer practices, as a result leaving the autistic obssessoids to occupy a greater percentage of the overall Nintendo fandom. Those people never grew or shrunk in number, they're just more visible now since the other fans moved on to other things.
