The left became so obsessed with punching nazis and labeling anyone with "bad thoughts" as one that they caused a pendulum effect by pushing the right further away into extremism.
Call everyone who disagrees with you a nazi and refuse to compromise on extremist opinions of your own and voila! You've created the problem you were pretending to fight against by uniting opposition under the banner you painted for them.
