I feel like the way manchildre-I'm sorry, "AFOLs" screech about polybags because they're more interested in being a simple build instead of being a handful of grey plates with another glup shitto for them to collect says everything about their place in lego right now.
pic related was one of my favorite childhood sets and I simply have a hard time believing lego would be willing to put out something like this at a $5 price point anymore. I know there's things to account for like inflation but surely you've heard of loss leaders. they've got enough $500 sets that cost $40 to produce that I'm sure they can afford to sell a few sets at $10 that cost $11 to make.
