Relic technology IS a stand-in for nuclear power. Hell, Zero Charge goes all the way into a Watchmen reference. There exists a pretty good argument for nuclear power not being a developed technology in the setting, since all instances of radiation refer to Collapse fallout.

The final gauntlet of events in gfl1 basically regards science itself, constructing the profiles of several scientists in the setting, and showcasing how they're all retarded assholes. The larger theme is that gifted people never get to work on important shit, the only ones who do are either very lucky average guys (Hume), ruthless psychopaths (Martha), people with strong ideological motivations trying to prove a predetermined conclusion (Shaw), and so on. In all cases this is very faustian and produces huge unintended side-effects. In Isolation Forest, Martha basically spells it out, and ultimately makes the point that even if a 'pure' gifted person gets to work on her projects, working on it is a deal with the devil no matter what, eventually giving you tunnel vision of sone kind. Now that Stasi knows Nele understands Nytos, they're not gonna let her go, either, but it's up to her to prove this right or wrong.

Of course, Shaw is ultimately a luddite. She is somewhat right that even without country-wasting mistakes, all this research is just a tool for technocrats to control society more easily. Nytos are presented as an immortality project to the public, but they're really the equivalent of Neuralink, trying to take control of the rich. But it's also true that in Bakery Girl, the URNC does eventually fix the world... before Wiliam fucks it up again in most endings. So there is clearly merit to studying it.
