Only from the soils of suffering can a character truly grow. If you have that perspective then I think it's fine really.
And personally I do not get the people that bemoan when their favorite characters get hurt and abused, or when they say underhanded shit to get ahead on their vices and even just straight up lie. Let the flaws accumulate and let it explode and let it destroy everything. It's like fireworks, it's at its most prettiest when it booms and burns!
