>the game lost its SOVL when they started catering to the "top end" faggot players
So you mean Planes era circa Summer 99 - Jan 2000. Because that's when endgame was being targeted by Verant, especially for raiding, since they finally had an idea what the game should be going forward since those that had a consistent subscription were the ones with massive sunk cost into the game (ala poopsocking raiders).
>Imagine if they never hired those faggots running the top EQ guilds at the time
Except the people at Verant liked raiding. And again, the ones with consistent subscriptions throughout 1999 were the ones heavily invested into the game and were usually the only ones that hit level 40+ and beyond. There was around 150k active subs six months in, with 225k purchases or rather a 66% retention rate (https://web.archive.org/web/20181028033700/http://www.gamershell.com/infosheets/219023.html#a4pZCKoTCuP6BEVp.99). While yes, I agree endgame became too focused, EQ never had a solid roadmap of what it was going to be since it was just a novel concept initially, hence why 989 spun off Verant in order to take the heat without impacting 989 if the game failed at launch. It was never designed around multiple expansions because the success it got was not expected.
And a lot of the top endgame players worked at Blizzard or went to work for Blizzard. The first level 50 was Alex Afrasiabi, who was the creative director of World of Warcraft. The difference between Verant/SoE and Blizzard was that Blizzard effectively played other videosgames in their offtime of developing games, where as a lot of the folks at Verant only played MUDs or kept to themselves. Had Verant/SoE actually kept a close connection with their fans and not outright spit on them, then maybe they wouldn't have developed such a horrible reputation by the early 2000's.
