It wouldn't be worth it, the SMO has already been enough of an investment for Russia and dealing with post-war terror on the land of people that don't want you there would not serve their national interests. When the war is over they'll want peace, in Russia and on their borders. Time will tell and I could be wrong but everything I've heard and read points to them not trying to take the west.

You're asking what government normally does? Depends a lot on the leaders in-power, but in-general they try a show-of-force.
Usually the show-of-forces causes capitulation (a-la Waco) but when tensions are hot enough they escalate the situation (a-la Lexington, Fort Sumpter, Kiev)
Ukraine is a unique situation much like Vietnam/Korea, being used as a theater for a higher-level war between world powers.
