>is the afterlife better than this place?
The realm of light is. But only pure souls can go there.
>how so?
It's an existence without suffering. You can just be in the light, without body, without identity, without desire for anything. It's ultimate harmony.
Or you can be an individual, with any form you want, in any surrounding you want. Like a perfect dreamworld. There you can enjoy pleasures, communicate with others, do things you want to do. I don't know if there are souls who spend their time in heaven snowboarding, but they can do if they want.
>are we doomed to suffer for all eternity?
Souls who aren't able to become pure will be reborn in the material world. They will suffer there. That might go on until the end of days.
Souls who become evil are not reborn but fall into the darkness. There they will experience a reality of constant pain, violence, fear, torture and death, and then it starts again. If they can escape this through regret and repentance, I don't know. I hope so.
