The movie needed robots. Robots that do all the jobs people can't do anymore. Robots to collect the trash. Robots to make the food. Robots to fix the infrastructure. Robots to repair other robots.
The only thing that humans would do would be to "plan" things (with the advice of robots). That's how you get "garbage avalanches", and freeways that just end with no exit.
