Yeah but the hivemind still wasn't strong enough to keep it together hence the second disaster and the creation of the zone. There is an optional ending where you can join your mind into the c-consciousness and help stabilize the zone with ur big brain, but the chaos ending where you kill all the scientists and let chaos reign and the zone grow bigger is actually the canonical ending because sdalger is based.
