Combined arms in the Alexandrian style trumped elephantmaxxing every time they met in battle. And an uma could probably shove a spear to the dumb beast's brainstem reliably.
I stand by my hypothesis that war at the operational and strategic level would not be much too different. The tactical implications of infantry that can make 30mph and hump 200 pounds over rough terrain, on the other hand...
