Part of the appeal of him is seeing him through Tidus' eyes first, juxtaposed with how Yuna and all the others feel about him. It doesn't line up at all, but Tidus isn't entirely wrong either, and both sides to Jecht have validity to them. He's still a drunk hard ass who was borderline abusive to his son because he didn't know how to express the love for him he actually had. Him coming to terms with that over the course of his journey, giving up alcohol all together, and realizing that hes been a shitty person up to this point, despite having a good heart and Tidus learning these things through Auron, Sphere recordings that Jecht left behind for him, and stories the others tell are part of what make him great.
I wonder how they could even portray his alcoholism up until the moonflow where he attacks the shoopuff.
I just really feel like they'd screw this up if we got to witness it all first hand instead of letting us fill in the blanks with our imaginations.

Hes similar in many ways, but Tidus is a lot more up in his own emotions, and a lot "softer".
Jecht Is definitely more of a hothead, who doesn't know how to express himself. Also the alcoholism (till he gives it up) is a pretty big separation as well. Not to mention during the time of Jecht's journey, hes a fair bit older than Tidus is during his.
