After a Ukrainian Igla MANPADS crew fired a 9M39 surface-to-air missile at a Ka-52M operating near the line of contact (escorted by a Mi-8MTV-5), the L-418-2 ultraviolet sensors detected the rocket motor’s UV plume. The system instantly passed the missile’s spatial coordinates to the L-418-5 turreted EO countermeasures module, whose SP3-1500 (“CП3-1500”) UV/IR lamp generated a high-energy beam toward the 9M39. The beam “blinded” the 9E410 (“9Э410”) infrared seeker, sending the missile off into empty air.
