Astarion's life is one long streak of doing everything wrong at every step of the way. They rewrote his backstory and made it more unclear, but even the final version hints that he was a corrupt magistrate who pissed off enough people that he eventually became a target. He was, and remains, an awful and evil person in a city full of awful, evil people.
