Russia feared encirclement from the encroaching NATO states so preemptively invaded Ukraine before it was absorbed into the EU/NATO power structure. Something it did in previous wars in Georgia, Chechnya and even Ukraine in previous confrontations. These wars produce tiny gains of territory that are usually lost when the Russian army leaves the region. However they seem to boost Russian patriotism and help keep Putin permanently entrenched in power.
The US saw an opportunity to sell loads of weapons after its decades long conflict in Afghanistan so encouraged Ukraine to march into a meat grinder in the hope of getting the stock value of US arms manufacturers to increase.
These kinds of wars don't produce any significant change in culture or territory. They mainly seem to be an exercise in pointless prolonged conflict to keep dictators in power and arms manufacturers wealthy.
