According to Politico, the UK and Germany are set to sign a major new defense treaty on July 17, agreeing that any strategic threat to one will be treated as a threat to both. The pact also covers cooperation on migration, transport, and research, and marks a shift toward stronger European defense ties as the U.S. retreats from its traditional leadership role. Negotiated over 18 rounds, the treaty builds on last year’s Trinity House Agreement and could give Germany mutual defense links with both of Europe’s nuclear powers.
