For a famous example, Relena's introduction explains exactly why she is so curious about Heero and so ready to call his bluff. The invitation meme scene doesn't end with her actually feeling threatened or believing in his words except as the subtext of guilt which he couldn't help but express. For as dramatic as the scene is, the ultimate point is entirely about the humanistic core of the characters and their relationship. It even changes the context of a later scene where she invokes his line, because she's essentially challenging his assertion that getting close to him will kill her. It isn't a sociopathic weird thing, it's a cute outburst of frustration because she's proved him wrong and wants to be acknowledged.
