If they weren't so bothered by it they wouldn't care, but clearly it bugs the living shit out of them. The comment itself digs into their own insecurities about not truly belonging, because they know deep down they don't belong. They only got in because either their friend or their crush is interested, or an overwhelming sense of needing to belong because they're so uninteresting and desperate for social acknowledgement.
