That sounds like what you're actually paying for is the right to torture something. And instead of feeding or fattening it, as a farmer might with livestock, you keep it around just long enough to grow to resent it and then justify all the terror that comes next. You and your whole family really might just be pieces of shit.

If so, I encourage you to ask yourself why the people who raised you might have done so as out-of-sight as possible.

I ask specifically because some data has suggested a physiological (possibly genetic) link to full blown psychopaths. Brain damage in particular areas of the brain are also strongly correlated. If you're related to these people by blood, and you were raised into this behavior, there's a case to be made that you may not be entirely to blame for your behavior. But at the end of the day, you still chose to knowingly torture an innocent creature at the flimsiest of excuses, while still recognizing the pain and "betrayal" in its eyes. You know what you did, and that's your choice to live with. But step-one would be to at the very least admit that shit was wrong OP.
