Infuriated - because of the wyvern's slaughter of his men, and because he in part felt lied to as he was expecting to slay a "true" dragon, Duke rushed in to face the beast. It bit him, slashed at him, and impaled him with it's stinger but failed to sicken or kill him. His archer ally and the soldiers with bows rained arrows on the monster, and as it threw Duke to the side it was greeted by the swords and spears of the men who remained.

Duke quickly recovered and charged back into the fray, pushing aside his companions so he could get one more hate-filled stab at the beast. The wyvern, vastly outnumbered and suffering far too much damage from these tiny monkeys, unfurled it's wings and began to fly away. This motion pushed many of the soldiers away from it, but Duke had impaled it's leg and held on for dear life as it rose. Duke drew his backup dagger and stabbed it's foot, while the archers let more arrows into the beast and finally brought it down. Duke let go of his sword and elected to take a short tumble down the side of the hill, as the wyvern's falling corpse would have crushed him if he didn't reposition.

After taking a moment to celebrate their victory and mourn their losses, Duke wondered if there was actually a true dragon around, but the soldiers insisted they must return to bury the dead.

Some soldiers arrived much sooner than the others, which is how the rumours quickly began to spread around the city and how Sara caught wind that some heroes would be coming through. Sara asked what Duke thought of his newfound reputation, to which he said he felt it wouldn't be earned until he had actually slain a dragon. He further added that since the wyvern was a cakewalk, a true dragon probably stands little chance as well.
